Slovaks dominate society, but 9% of the population is Hungarian and there is a large Gypsy minority. Tension has increased between the Slovaks and Hungarians, particularly over the directive that Hungarians should adopt Slovak name endings. Before independence, many skilled Slovaks took senior jobs in Prague, but few have returned to help structure the new Slovakia. Roman Catholicism remains a powerful social force.
